BIG News!

Happy Thursday to you! I hope that you have had a lovely week thus far.

Today is supposed to be our first ever, "Thursday Thoughts"! (If you missed that post, click here) And it still is, but first things first, I thought that I should share my news with you...

Now I have been actually waiting awhile now to share the news with you, so here it is, after months of anticipation (for me :))

I'm moving!

More specifically, my blog is moving, but nonetheless, I am very excited!

Lately, I just have not liked the appearance of my blog. It kind of aggravated me. Even though this blog is so much more than its appearance, I felt that I should enjoy looking at my blog, rather than be annoyed with it!

I have been working very long and hard on my new blog, so I hope that you like it.

Here is my new blog domain:

Now I'm not 100% sure that I am totally done making adjustments and whatnot, but as you can see the layout is very similar, but I feel that the blog is cleaner and more inviting now.

Before

After

As long as I continue to spread God's word, I will be happy. ☺

I hope that you will follow me over to the new blog- if so, see you there!

(My original "Thursday Thoughts" post will be posted on my new blog, the time and date still continue to be true to my previous post)

You're Invited!

Hey, guys! On Thursday I am going to start something new on the blog- "Thursday Thoughts". Lately I have been reading a ton of inspiring and thought-provoking quotes and poems and I want to share them with you.  Each Thursay I will post a quote and I will respond to it. I feel that this will be a good way to have discussions together, getting all sorts of different perspectives on topics relating to God! I am very excited to start this! Remember- this Thursday at 2:00pm Eastern Time!  I hope to see you there! :)

Memorial Day

"Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you; Jesus Christ and the American soldier. One died for your soul; the other died for your freedom"

Jesus said, "There is no greater love than laying your life down for your friends". Love overflows in the hearts of those who serve. They feel a duty higher than themselves. They understand the honor that comes with being a soldier and carry that honor on their shoulders.

In many ways, those who serve can be compared to the way that Jesus loved us. There are actually more similarities than what's on the surface. So, today I decided to blog about these similarities. Perhaps making the connection between Jesus and these heroes will allow us to hold these men and women a little higher in our hearts.

     1. They feel that we are worth dying for.
Even though we constantly make mistakes, create conflict, and hate others, both Jesus and our American soldiers continue to serve us.

     2. Neither get the respect that they deserve.
Jesus was mocked up until his last breath, and continues to be mocked to this day. The same goes for our soldiers. People mock their service by burning our flags and just being ungrateful for the sacrifices that millions of soldiers have made over the years.

     3. Both teach us lessons through their humility.
Serving is not an easy thing, in far as being a soldier and being a preacher. It is hard and often unappreciated work. Yet, even though they have humbled themselves to such jobs, they do their jobs well, humbly and lovingly.

     4. They serve and love others.
How hard is it to forgive someone who has done wrong to you? Imagine having to die for that person. Both Jesus and our soldiers had to do this. Jesus hated no one, but many hated him yet he died for these people. Soldiers have feelings just like anyone else. They might hate certain people, yet they continue to serve them on a daily basis.

     5. They don't forget the little people.
Jesus especially was kind to the weaker people. He was gentle and loving with them, even though many considered such people to be outcasts. He touched lepers, the untouchables, and loved rowdy children. The same goes for our soldiers. They aren't just fighting for these big government people, they fight for the homeless, the sick, and the despaired.

     6. They never give up.
This one speaks for itself. Jesus didn't cower away when it was his time. The soldiers laid down courageously in the same way when it was their time. When things became frightening neither tried to run away, but accepted their fate and handled it with courage.

    7. They give us freedom.
Jesus has given us freedom from sin and eternal life. The soldiers have given us freedom and safety in our country. Thank God for both.

    8. They are heroes.
"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself" (Joseph Campbell). Jesus is one of the most heroic people that I know, and the soldiers are no less of a hero.

    9. We don't mourn their lives, but rather celebrate them.
"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived." (George S. Patton) We don't mourn that Jesus died, we celebrate that he defeated sin! In the same way, we should celebrate the lives of those who did die. Both deserve to be celebrated on a daily basis!

I am so thankful for every brave hero who has given everything for me to freely and safely live here in the United States, and for the man who laid down his life to give me freedom from sin and eternal life.
Happy Memorial Day! God Bless You!

God NEVER Fades ~ Again!

Well, everyone! It's officially been one whole year since I started, "God Never Fades"! YAY!!!

I'd like to direct you to my first post: Click Here!

I am so so thankful for everyone who has read and continues to read my posts. You are the reason God wants me to blog. You are the people who I want to inspire to follow in God's path. I thank God for you, and thank Him for allowing me such a fulfilling experience as I have gotten through blogging.

Never did I think one year ago that I would even be here, still blogging. Even though I haven't many readers, the ones that I do have are the kindest people... I thank you!

This blog is so much more than me though, it is about God. I never want this blog to be about getting the largest following or to be the most jazzy blog out there... it is about leading people to our never-changing God.

If there is anything that I have learned over the year, it is that God knows the best path for you and He will NEVER fade nor leave you. There have been times when I did not follow in God's word the best I could, or wanted to stay on His path like I should, but whenever I found my way back on track, it was oh-so much more fulfilling that when I was without Him.

God is always here for you. Remember that always as you go about your life.

Thank you again everyone. Most of all, I thank God for everything He has given me and continues to give me! Here's to many more years of writing for God- my loyal and unfading God. ♥

Let Your Light Shine

Hello, everyone! School is officially out for the Summer and I can blog to my heart's content! ♥

Today is a short and sweet post. I have just started Bible journaling (in a sketchbook) and I love it! Bible journaling is basically sketching a verse to make your Bible reading experience more memorable, and perhaps even more personal.

Today I thought that I would share with you one of my first creations... it is very rough and in pencil, but I am quite proud of it.

(I take no credit for the idea, as I found it on Pinterest, but the work is my own)

The verse is Matthew 5:16;
"Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven".

I am not quite to the chapter Matthew (I'm in Proverbs), but I love this verse, so I was inspired to sketch it out. Somehow, writing it down made it more personal for me.

Shining with the love of Christ and for Christ is the best glow you could ever wish for. It's easy to get caught up in acting like society wants you to, but truly God is the way to go.

I am very excited to blog more again soon! Most likely I will not have another post up until Monday or Tuesday- my brother is graduating tomorrow!  Graduation weekend has stirred up a lot in me, so I have plenty of post ideas! Now, if only I sit down and write them, we'll be in business! ;)

I'll be praying for you- God's Blessings!

Success < Love

As I stood upon the little green-blue stage of the multi-purpose room of my school and accepted my awards for this school year, I blushed and halfheartedly accepted them. I glanced around nervously at the sea of students, each individually successful in their own way. Successful. I stumbled over that word.

Even though I received many awards tonight, I don't know if I would consider myself...successful. Grades are great, sure. I just felt though, that the definition of success seemed a bit...wrong.

Good grades are, well good, but are they really all that we should strive for... to be successful? Society deems success as having good grades, having a large house, having a multitude of money, and having a high paying, stressful, over-the-top job that you could consider a 'bragging right'. To me it all seems wrong.

Success should not be measured in achievements, but rather the way you look at life.

I listen to my parents discuss their success. They seem disappointed. They seem to feel that they hadn't achieved much.... they hadn't succeeded in their endeavors. I feel the complete opposite though.

My parents are good, kind people who care deeply about their family. They have raised three good and kind children who have a love for God and care about other people. These children respect those around them and treat others with the utmost kindness in their hearts. They are quiet and courteous, and just a dash bashful!

Is that not successful? Is being a good person not an achievement? Something that should be held in high honor?

I feel that success in God's eyes in measured in love, not awards.

Accepting these awards made me feel embarrassed. I know that I've done well in school... anyone who tries hard enough can do that. But only a few people can actually say that they have succeeded in loving their neighbor and following God's commands.

Succeeding in love often goes unnoticed, but I feel that it deserves the greatest award, with which you will be repaid with... God's eternal home.

"Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers."
Psalms 1: 1-3

God bless you and may you be successful in love, walking a good path, delighting in the Lord. Then, you will be truly successful.

Life's Process

If you are anything like me, you have probably asked yourself, "What's my purpose?"

I am a sophomore in high school (junior in 16 days!). Graduation will be here before I even have a chance to blink. And that scares me. I know that I've probably mentioned it a few hundred times, but not knowing my purpose can be frightening.

I have to remind myself over and over again to trust in God. Don't make plans that I feel that I have to make, just because everyone else is making them. Don't try to make the puzzle piece fit. Honestly, it is a trying process, one that will not be solved overnight!

Recently, I read a devotion. It is a very lovely devotion. I know that some of you have mentioned that you are worried about your future too, so I thought that I would share this devotion with you, because I know that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
"God is all about your life's process, not purpose. Purpose is a big deal, but not as big a deal as obedience- just doing what you are called to do right now. It's easy to start to freak out when you can't figure out your purpose in life, but God doesn't want you to focus on some great purpose off in the distance; he wants you to find Him in the moment, right now. He wants you to rise above yourself, your needs, and your desires and to trust Him right now, not someday in the future when you find your purpose. God's purpose for your life isn't for later; it's for now. His purpose for you is the process of continually doing what He asks you to do, no matter how much it hurts. If you can move through the turmoil, stress, and strain of life by obeying God's Word and looking to Him for each step and action, you will have found your purpose. It's a human and even prideful thing to focus on looking for a "greater" purpose. God doesn't need your grand accomplishments, but He wants your heart, fully devoted and trusting in Him. When you give your life to Him with that in mind, you'll see that every day you have fulfilled your purpose of loving the one who gave you life. The more you live with this goal in mind, the better your days will be and the more of an impact your life will have. So don't think like other people think. Don't focus on yourself but focus on God. Don't ask: "What's my purpose?" You know your purpose: to love and serve the one true God so that His will may be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Line up your life with his, and your life will be a true success.
Hayley DiMarco, Devotions for the God Girl: A 365-Day Journey

I don't usually like to use the content of other people's work, but I felt that this devotion was too good not to share, so thank you to Hayley DiMarco!

Hayley has it all right. God clearly states what we are supposed to do- love Him and our neighbors. We want to be successful and have grand purposes in our lives, when in reality, our grandest purpose is to follow God! Such a simple idea has been before us this entire time, yet we seem to want to find our own ways to live our lives.

God is our purpose. God is our success story. After all, you'd rather have eternal success over temporary earthly success, right?

So next time we get down about our 'purpose', remember that your purpose is not that far away. Seek God, and you will have sought after your purpose. Doesn't that leave you worry free? :)

St. Catherine's Day

Happy, April! As the month draws to an end, I thought that I would reflect on some wise advice that I have heard from Catherine of Siena. (March 25th, 1347 - April 29th, 1380)

I don't know much about Catherine, but I did a bit of research about her. Here's what I found:
"Catherine ranks high among the spiritual writers of the Church. She remains a greatly respected figure for her spiritual writings, and political boldness to "speak truth over power"- it being exceptional for a woman, in her time period, to have had such influence in politics and on world history."
The first time that I heard about St. Catherine was at the Royal Wedding of Catherine Middleton to Prince William, in 2011. I remembered the sermon that was given that day in Westminster Abbey. The preacher mentioned St. Catherine, it being St. Catherine's Day (April 29th). He quoted her:

"Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire."

He went on the say that Catherine and William should help each other be who God meant them to be, here on earth, following God and bringing up children who would be trained to do the same.

The wedding was lovely, the couple beautiful, but the quote, I adore!

A couple of posts ago I talked about letting God help you find who you are meant to be. This quote further confirms that when you let God direct your paths and fit you into your place, you will truly shine with His light!

Follow in God's path and you will glow with the fiery passion for God!

Regardless of her gender, Catherine found her purpose in spreading God's truths. She truly was influential... thousands of years later, and here she still inspires people of today. Follow in God's purpose for you...set the world aflame!

Best wishes to you- and to the happy couple on their fifth anniversary. May you all glow with fiery passion for Christ!

The "Have to" List

Do you ever have something that you have to do? Like the kind of have to where your life will not be complete without it?
For example: "I have to get a new dress for the dance!" Susie squealed.
What about the kind of have to that you maybe don't like so much... like chores or homework?
For example: "I have to wash the dishes before mom gets home!" John exclaimed.
So what is the difference between them?  Basically, one is fun and the other isn't so much. One is the thing which you would love to do. The other is something that you dread to do.

I have a question for you. Now it might make you squirm, but don't worry. We're all friends here.

Which category would you place 'Reading the Bible' in, for you personally? What about 'Talking to God'?

Now I want you to answer honestly. Be truthful with yourself. Are you getting squirmy? Please don't leave if you are (or if you aren't!).

Personally, for me... and I am being 100% honest here... reading the Bible can sometimes feel like a chore. There are times when I don't want to read it. There are even times when I dread doing so, or don't even bother to at all.

I think that God kind of expects it to happen.

I don't know if you have read 2 Chronicles, but let me tell you. Those rulers were totally off and on from one generation to the next. Basically, each chapter talks about a King of Israel, and whether or not he lived the way God wanted them to live. One chapter, the ruler was good and fair, despised evil, and followed the Lord. By the next chapter, there was a new king who was the exact opposite!

There are going to be times when we don't want to read our Bibles. I think that is just the human spirit. But God doesn't want us to be lazy and fall into bad habits! No! He wants us to be strong and stand up for Him.

So how do I personally do that? Well, I'll tell you. Here is a list!

1. Accept the fact that you might be a bit worn out.
Even the brightest scholars need a break once in awhile. If you are getting burnt out, I would take a break, one day, just to refresh yourself.

2. Pray for Strength.
Honestly, there are days when I can only pray this simple prayer: "Please God, help me." God knows what I need. Even with a simple prayer, I feel replenished and ready to serve in Him.

3. Just Do It
Pick up the Good Book. Open it. Read it. For some reason, it can seem a bit more difficult than it really is!

4. Read John 8:31-32
These verses give me strength when I remember what I get out of the Bible, out of my relationship with God: freedom.

5. Remember, it's not a 'Have to' thing, but a want to.
Realize that God didn't have to give us His love or His word- He wanted to. Want to read. Want to grow closer to Him. If you develop a desire to want Him, then it will no longer seem like a chore, but something that you enjoy and look forward to daily.

So there you have it!

I pray that you will be able to combat any negative feelings that you have towards the things that bring us closest to God! Like I've said before, it is not always going to be so easy to want to follow God. The desire to follow Him is something that we must cultivate and take care of. You wouldn't expect a rose to bloom overnight, now would you?

Forcing a Puzzle Piece

A few weeks ago, my sister and I were piecing a puzzle together. It was a 400-piece jigsaw puzzle, so it was a bit challenging. Pieces fit into place, and others did not. Some were missing and there were gaps in the puzzle. But, when all of the pieces came together, they made a beautiful picture.

I am big on analogies and metaphors. I can look at a piece of paper and turn it into a way to explain life's mysteries. Knowing me, I took a puzzle and turned it into something more.☺

There were several times where I tried to fit a piece into a place where I just knew it had to go. It looked and felt so right. It just had to fit there so I could move on to the next piece.

This got me thinking....

I'm a Sophomore in high school. By now, everyone expects you to know what you are going to do with your life after high school. Everyone, literally everyone in my class, knows exactly what they want to do after high school... but me, not so much.

I haven't the slightest clue as to where I fit.

I have people constantly asking me, "What are you doing after high school?" My meek reply? "I don't know." This makes me feel so embarrassed. 'Why don't I know? Maybe I should just try to pick a job that looks cool.' In other words, I am trying to make the puzzle piece fit in a place where it doesn't go.

I get scared when I can't see the path ahead of me. I get frustrated when I can make the piece fit or I can't see the full picture.

I have to remind myself to be patient. I have to remind myself to trust in God's plan for me.

Years ago, God came to a man named Abraham He told him to move his family, lead them to a land that he had never even been to.

Can you imagine? One day God calls you up, "Hey! Yeah, you're going to need to come with me to a place you've never been to. Oh, and you are going to be leading a bunch of other people with you and they are going to be super whiny!"I don't know about you, but that sounds like something that I would worry about!

But, Abram went anyway. He trusted in God. He knew that God's plan would be greater than his.

Later, God promised Abraham that he would be a father, with offspring as numerous as the stars! I must mention that both Abe and his wife Sarah were up there in age. They were shocked and couldn't believe that this would happen to them! They doubted that they would be parents.

But, as always, God prevailed. (God NEVER Fades!). Abraham just needed to trust in God. He was too worried that God wasn't going to follow through with him. God doesn't abandon you though.

Like Abraham, God has a plan for you.

You know what? We don't have to worry about where we are supposed to be. God's got this. I may not know where I want to be in two years, but I know that God knows.

God knows the plans that He has for you and I. He knows the perfect place that you will fit in, just like a puzzle piece in a puzzle. God will place you in your place, if you only wait for his perfect timing. I try to think of it as a test. God is testing me, trying to see if I will be patient enough for Him to make my crooked paths straight. After all, you can't fit a puzzle piece in a place that doesn't fit. Let God show you where you fit in perfectly!

Timing is everything. After all, you wouldn't expect to finish a puzzle in a few seconds, would you? Wait for God to place your pieces.

Selfless Servant

Once, I made a silly deal with my siblings.  I wanted something, a glass of water or a Pop Tart...something like that, I can't remember! Anyway, my siblings wouldn't budge. They didn't want to get up off of the couch anymore than I did. The kitchen seemed so far away, and the couch was oh so cozy.

Frankly, I didn't really blame them. But, couldn't they just please go get me that snack? Not very convincing. Somewhere between an ad break on the show we were watching, I managed to concoct a little deal with my little sister and brother.

"Okay, if you guys will get me something to drink from the kitchen,  I promise that tomorrow I will do whatever you want me to do for you!"

Pretty convincing, if I may say so myself!

My brother and sister seemed to think so too, because sure enough, the duo caved and brought me whatever it was that I had wanted so desperately.

Bright and early that next morning, I heard my name being called. "Laura!" I groaned and rolled over.

"What do you want?  I am trying to get some sleep in here!" I said in my sweetest annoyed voice.

"Don't you remember? The deal?"

My eyes shot open. I figured that they would've forgotten about that! I quickly got up to possibly talk some sense into my siblings. I couldn't possibly be their maid for the entire day! To no avail though, they wouldn't scrap the deal.

All day I found myself catering to every ridiculous whim my siblings might of had. I rolled my eyes and dragged my feet. It was no fun to serve to those two.

When the day ended, boy was I glad! Never again have I made a deal like that!

Never again have I made a deal like that.

Hmm. I started thinking about this the other day.

Jesus didn't call us to be lazy, complaining children of God. He wants us to gladly serve our neighbors. He wants us to show love and compassion to those around us, even when they are demanding.

We should live to serve, not to be served.

We should put others before ourselves.

But most of all, our main focus should be to please God above all things.

Was it fun to wait on hand and foot... not really. Was it fun to be concerned with my siblings needs before mine own? No. I can honestly say that I was miserable.

It might not be fun to think about other people and their needs. It might make you miserable. It might be hard. Regardless of this, we are called to be servants like Christ.

Jesus served others before he served himself. He served others in little ways, and he also served us all in the biggest way possible- dying on the cross to save us from our sins.

Was that fun for him? Did it make him happy? Did he make sure that he was cushy and comfortable? No. Maybe he wasn't happy, but God was.

Strive to a servant. Help those around you. Show your love and Christlike attitude through serving. Who knows? Maybe you'll inspire someone to do the same.
"Serve with your whole heart, as if you were serving the Lord, not people." Ephesians 6:7
"The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and give his life as ransom to many." Mark 10:45
Serve your neighbors with love. Get your brother or sister that Pop Tart they asked for. Spread love and a desire to serve others through your own servant attitude!

Easter Sunday!

Happy, happy Easter! Our Lord has risen- he has risen indeed! Hallelujah!

Today is a day to rejoice! Jesus has conquered sin and death! He has given us a connection with God that we could not of reached without him! Let's take a moment to thank Jesus for his priceless gift!

What a perfect reminder of Jesus' s unfading love. This blog, God Never Fades, is all about the lasting love of our Savior.  The sacrifices that Jesus gave up for you and I truly show just how much he really does love us!

Today we celebrte His unfailing love that has lasted for thousands of years. This is a love that isn't new, but isn't going anywhere. His love is here to stay.

There might be days after the Easter sweetness wears off and we forget just how great this love is. But who is always there thinking about us? Why the person who we are celebrating today, that's who!

If you're like me, you probably have cross jewelry. Look at it today. Examine its true meaning more than you have before. Understand its importance. Love its message. Remember the Savior who hung on that cross. Thank him! Love him! Praise him!

Our Savior suffers no more! He has resurrected! Rejoice!

"He has risen!" Matthew 28:6

Good Friday

Today,  two thousand years ago, at 3 o' clock, Jesus breathed his last breath. It's rather awe inspiring to think of.

After hours of beatings, mockery, carrying and hanging on a cross, as well as wearing a crown of thorns, Jesus  said his last words: "It is finished."

Our King humbled himself one last time today. After all of the humiliation and pain that Jesus endured, he will now rise up above it all. He laughed in the face of death, sin, and despair. He crushed it all. It (sin) truly is finished.

I have always felt that Good Friday should be called Black Friday, and that Black Friday should be called Good Friday. Then, Black Friday would be a day of sadness, and Good Friday would be a day of good deals, instead of the other way around!

Regardless of our feelings of sorrow on this Friday, it actually is a good day. While the death of our Lord Jesus is not a pleasant story, it is important.

Without Jesus, our sins would define us. We would have no way to Heaven, except through perfection. Let's face it though, Heaven would be rather empty if this were the case. Jesus saved us from our sins by humbling himself. The perfect man died for us and our imperfections.

Jesus was and is the crucial bridge between us and God!

The day might seem black, but the deal that we received out of today was better than any after Thanksgiving bargain, because we were gifted eternal life and eternal love!

Eternal life was won for us today! The devil can no longer rule over us! Our sin no longer determines nor defines us! Rejoice because it is finished! The Devil has no strongholds over us!

Please read John 18:1-19:42 for the whole Crucifixion story; the greatest love story ever known. Don't just read it... feel it, picture it, understand what this story entails for you... for me.

Have a blessed Good Friday...The day when hope for eternity began.

Maundy Thursday

Today is Maundy Thursday...today is the last celebration of our Lord Jesus before his Crucifixion. This evening was his last evening on earth as a human being. I can't even imagine how he must of felt. Knowing that he was going to be betrayed by Judas, Peter would deny even knowing him, and the most terrifying of all... the Crucifixion. Today was his last night before the pain and suffering that we can't even begin to imagine.

Today was the Last Supper of Jesus. On this day thousands of years ago, tonight was the Passover and Jesus was dining with his disciples. Before they dined, Jesus humbled himself once again. He washed his disciples feet. The King washed the feet of lowly sinners. Back then, the roads were not paved, and men and women did not have sneakers or socks to cover their feet from dirt and grime... those had to of been some pretty dirty feet!
"It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet."
Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "Not just my feet but wash my hands and my head as well!"
Jesus answered, "Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one of them was clean.
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place."Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord', and rightly so, for this is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do."          John 13: 1-17
Once Jesus had washed all twelve of the disciple's feet, they sat down to eat. I am sure that you have seen Leonardo da Vinci's painting, 'The Last Supper'. In fact, you might just have a copy hanging in your home. As I type this, I can look across at my family's painting. Attention is immediately drawn to Jesus standing in the middle, blessing the food and drink. You can almost hear him say, "Take and eat".

Last year I was confirmed. This is my first year being able to take communion, and it is a special feeling to be able to dine with Jesus and have my sins forgiven in a special ritual. This year more than ever, the Lord's Supper, or Maundy Thursday, seems to mean more than it ever has before. Being able to connect with Jesus in this way now is humbling.

If I can feel like this two thousand years later, imagine how the disciples felt that night!
"While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink for it, all of you. This is my blood, which is shed for you and the forgiveness of your sins. I tell you, I will not drink from the fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."               Matthew 26: 26;29

Even though we know what tomorrow will be, Jesus does give us hope in that we will be able to join him in Heaven, at the Father's table. That is what Easter is all about. Our sins being forgiven so that we may be able to join God in Heaven. Without Jesus, we would be missing that crucial step in which our sins are forgiven. Without Jesus, we wouldn't make it to Heaven.

Today, let it be a day of celebration! Jesus has washed us clean so that we may join with our Father in Heaven! Rejoice!

Prayers for Brussels

I am shocked and in tears. I am in disbelief once again that human beings could cause each other so much pain. Anger boils up within me. Sadness simmers. I can't decide which feeling I am.

How could this happen again? A beautiful place like Brussels, encompassed in terror and hatred. How could they? Human beings just like you and I completing such a monstrous attack... it's just so hard for me to fathom that there are actual souls behind their human face.

Minutes ago I found out what happened. Yesterday I had declared today tech-free for me, so I hadn't read any articles or watched any news segments. I just signed on moments ago to complete my daily Bible devotion. How glad I am to be alone now with God and my prayers.

Today, I felt that my daily Bible devotion was very fitting for today.
"He will swallow up death forever! The Sovereign Lord will wipe away all tears. He will remove forever all insults and mockery against His land and His people. The Lord has spoken!   Isaiah 25:8
I pray that God will give His peace to everyone affected. I pray that He will guide the families of those who were killed. I pray that the first aid workers will be given strength. I pray that God will protect those sent to protect... police, army, and anyone else who courageously serves in this time of need. I pray that God will heal the wounded. I pray that God will justly punish those that feel that terrorizing innocent people is okay. I pray that you and I will forgive them for such actions. I pray for love.

Remember, God is always here. The earth is a dirty, sinful place. Bad things will happen. We will suffer and cry. God will clense us from our sorrows and will destroy all evil. God will be here with peace that passes all understanding.

Easter is so close now. Today more than ever, the meaning of Easter should shine through. Jesus came to this disgusting, sin-filled earth to die and save us from our sins. Because of Jesus, we have hope for tomorrow and for eternal life. We can live free now and forever because Jesus died.

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. "

Taking a Bribe in Lieu of Your Beliefs

The other day at school, a boy asked me, "If I gave you five-hundred dollars, would you cuss?" Knowing my ethics and the person that they've known for the past six years, I'm sure that it did not surprise them when I said, "No."

A few of my classmates stood around and gave their opinion:
"For five-hundred dollars, I would say a thousand bad words!"
"They're just words..."
"I'm a Christian, and no where in the Bible does it say that you shouldn't cuss."
I should mention that all of these kids (minus the boy) do in fact say that they are Christians.

So many Bible Verses flooded my mind... Ephesians 4:29, James 1:26, and James 3:9-11. Of course the Bible talks about not cursing!  It's even one of the 10 Commandments! (Exodus 20) Besides, could you honestly say that God applauds filthy language?

To be honest, I get asked questions like this all of the time. Questions ranging from one extreme to the next. No one ever seems surprised at my answer, but they are very quick to retaliate with their own opinions.

The boy asked another question: "Why?"
Without even thinking, I quickly replied. "It's not worth it."
No one said anything. The conversation just dropped off. A few minutes later the bell rang and we went our separate ways to our next classes.

I'm not really sure why the conversation ended. "It's not worth it" isn't exactly a shocking statement. Perhaps it made them think about their own actions. Perhaps they got bored contrasting my same old reply. I really can't say.

What I can say, however, is that we Christians should not be willing to give up on our beliefs so quickly. Money should never be worth more than pleasing God.

Martyrs die for their beliefs. Christians are persecuted and killed just for saying that they believe in a higher force. While death isn't pretty, I would be proud to say that I stood up for God. God is worth more than life itself. God is worth more than money. God is worth more than anything else. God is eternal life.

If you ever feel like God is not worth it, please rethink. With Easter coming up in a week, now is better than ever to give this lesson. God called upon Jesus to save us from our sins. Jesus prayed often that he wouldn't have to experience such pain and suffering, but he knew that that was God's plan. He didn't try to get out of it. He didn't claim that he didn't know God. He didn't deny that he was indeed King. Jesus accepted his suffering because he knew that God was worth it. He knew that God was the greatest cause he could ever stand up for. And aren't you glad that he did?

Guys, the point is that people want to see you fall. They want to see you sin. They want to see you succumb to what society says is cool. We Christians are supposed to be an example though. Don't let anyone bribe you away from your beliefs. Trust me. When you are on your deathbed, would you rather be proud to say that you lived a life best fit to God's path, or you strayed onto society's path? It's your choice. Personally, I would not choose the latter.

To be honest, if someone did give me five-hundred dollars to cuss, how would I feel about that money? It wouldn't be money well earned, now would it? Sinning is the same deal. Someone tells you to sin, but does it ever feel good in the end? Is it satisfying? No. Choose God. Choose satisfaction. You will be glad that you did.

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29

"Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless."  James 1:26

"With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?"  James 3: 9-11

"And you must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching." Titus 2:7

Springtime is Here!

Hello, all! It is officially Spring! Well, actually yesterday, March 20th (also Palm Sunday!) was the First Day of Spring. I didn't want to take away from yesterday's festivities and celebrations though, so here is my Spring post!

I decided to compile some of my favorite- old and new- Bible Verses about Spring and new beginnings, because isn't that what Spring is- a time for new weather, plants, and little creatures? But one thing that we can count on is our familiar, unchanging, and perfect God!

"Look, the winter is past, and the rains are over and gone. The flowers are springing up, the seasons of singing birds has come, and the cooing of turtledoves fills the air." Song of Solomon 2:11-12
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."         Hebrews 13:8
"The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever." Isaiah 40:8
"Then God said, "Let the land sprout with vegetation- every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came." And that is what happened. The land produced vegetation- all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good." Genesis 1:11-12
"He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth." Psalm 104:14
"This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; and new life has begun!" 2 Corinthians 5:17
"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his lifespan? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Matthew 6:25-34
"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing." Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
"Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime; it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms. He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone." Zechariah 10:1
"Spring flowers are in blossom all over. The whole world's a choir- and singing! Spring warblers are filling the forest with sweet arpeggios. Lilacs are exuberantly purple and perfumed, and cherry trees fragrant with blossoms. Oh, get up, dear friend, my fair and beautiful lover- come to me!" Song of Solomon 2:12-13
"Rain down, you heavens from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together. I, the Lord, have created it." Isaiah 45:8
"The Sovereign Lord will show his justice to the nations of the world. Everyone will praise Him! His righteousness will be like a garden in early spring, with plants springing up everywhere!" Isaiah 61:11
"Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord's return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen." James 5:7
Happy Spring, all! Have a lovely Monday!

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday. One of my absolute favorite days in the church calendar. I love the singing, the swaying of the palm branches, and the celebration. It is a bittersweet celebration, knowing that in just a few, short days Jesus will have suffered the Crucifixion.

Palm Sunday is the celebration of Jesus entering Jerusalem for the Passover. The people of Jerusalem were so excited for Jesus' arrival. They covered the streets in their clothes and waved palm branches while shouting "Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna to the Son of David!" Jesus rode in on a donkey, not as if he were a king (which He is!), but humbled himself and wore simple cloths.

Palm Sunday is a Sunday reminding us of what is to come. We know that Christ is coming. He is coming to carry the burden of the cross and our sins. He will suffer and he will be tortured and mocked. The great King will once again humble himself to save us. We are reminded of this one last time. He humbled himself by coming to earth as a baby born in a manger. He humbled himself by healing others. He humbled himself by washing the feet of his disciples. He humbled himself by dying on the cross.

We are reminded that even though he suffered humiliation, he will rise above it, rise above death.

"The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his was to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
"Hosanna!"
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Blessed is the King of Israel!"
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: "Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt." At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. Now the crowd was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"                John 12:12-19

The story is also found several other places in the Bible. (In Matthew 21, Luke 19, and Mark 11) This goes to show you that this is a day of anticipation and excitement! It is a day to be celebrated and remembered! This is a reminded for us of Jesus' triumphant return as our King and Savior!

Trusting in God

On Wednesday, my class took an Algebra II test. Math is not one of my strongest subjects and it never has been. Nonetheless, I've always had a good grade in that class. I felt pretty good about the test. I turned it in and sighed a sigh of relief. Math tests are stressful for me.

I had started to come down with a sore throat kind of thing, it wasn't too serious, but I didn't really feel very well throughout the entire test. I didn't think much of it during the test, but afterwards I started to worry.

I had never taken a test when I was sick. I wasn't sure that I had thought through things clearly. Suddenly I began to reexamine the test in my mind, trying to resolve each problem. I felt sick to my stomach thinking about everything that I probably did wrong. I felt as if I had answered everything wrong. I felt like my grade would go down in shambles. I didn't trust myself.

For the past two nights, I have waken up out of a dead sleep, worrying about that test. During the day while I slept (from being sick) I would just wake up in cold sweats and immediately my mind flew towards that test. I was so worried that I cried myself, the warm tears making my feverish face even hotter.

I have never been like this before. I have taken harder tests than this one... in fact I've been less worried about finals. I even told a fellow classmate who had missed the test that it was pretty easy, and that she would be fine. I have no idea why I was so worried, I guess I would say that it had to do with me being sick. Most of all, though, I have no idea why I let worry consume me.

Every time I have a test, I spend a significant amount of time studying for it. I also spend time praying to God, asking Him to help me study efficiently and to help me do well on my tests. This always calms me down and always seems to help me- and my grades!

As per usual, before the test I prayed to God to let Him know that I felt pretty nervous and that I needed His help to stay calm and to help me do the best that I could on this test. I felt calm and took the test.

As the day progressed, worry flooded my mind. I just knew that I was going to get a bad grade. I knew it. I waited for the teacher to post the grade, checking the online grades every 30 minutes. Usually, I trust God, knowing that He was there with me to help me study, and He was there with me during the test. I began to replace God with worry. At times I felt like saying "Oh, God! Why? Why are you going to let me fail?"  This put even more worry on me. I couldn't control it anymore. I replaced God with another distraction... TV or internet. I had to find a way to get my mind off of things.

These things worked pretty well. Once I got into a movie or a new episode, worry floated away. But, movies only last so long. Once they were over, the worry came back. Substitutes for God NEVER work.

I had forgotten some verses that I even have hanging up on the walls of my house.
"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and mind as you live in Christ Jesus."                                                          Philippians 4: 6-7
"Cast all of your cares on Him, because He cares."          1 Peter 5:7
I was so caught up in my grade that I forgot that there is an alternative to worry: and that is God. In science class the other day, we were talking about sugar substitutes. Sugar substitutes are extremely harmful. They are practically rat poison. Little do we humans know, but sugar substitutes cause more damage than actual sugar. Everyone has jumped on the bandwagon for sugar-free stuff, but do you really know what you are replacing it with? Do you really know what you are getting yourself into?

The same goes for God. We think that we are totally okay with replacing God with some cheap substitute, like worry, drugs, money, etc. We think that we can make it on our own without Him. How does that affect us though? Not in good ways. It either kills us, or makes us addicted. Cheap substitutes are no match for the love of God.

Sometimes, you might get dragged up on the bandwagon. You might let substitutes replace God. You might think that these substitutes are the better route at times. Trust me though, they are NOT. Worry causes nothing but unnecessary pain and suffering, as do things like drugs, money addictions, food, and ______ (fill in the blank).

You can however, trust in God, putting your cares on Him and praying to Him. He will help you through times of suffering and sorrow. Unlike those cheap substitute we were talking about before, God actually cares. God knows what you need. He knows that you need peace. As said in Philippians 4: 6-7, God has "a peace that surpasses all understanding". Let God transfer some of that peace to you. Jump off the bandwagon and walk beside the Lord.

God's way might not be the quicker way to get where you want to go, but it is the better and more effective way. Trust in Him above all things. This will change you. Worrying about everything changes nothing, except your state of mind and your mood... and not in a good way.

Don't let worry consume you. Worrying is just wasting precious time that you could be spending in much more fulfilling ways. The next time you feel like you need something to get through a hard time, and that something is not God, I want you to make a list. Make a list of all of the ways you could be spending your time instead of spending your time with a cheap substitute. Here's an example:

Instead of ______ (for me I would write Worrying) I Could:
- Spend time with God
- Spend time with my family
- Read a book
- Go outside
- Read the Bible
- Ride my bike
- Help someone with a difficult task
- Help someone unexpectedly

Have a lovely week! I pray that you will rid yourself of any substitute that you have for God. Let Him help you, care for you, love you, and give you peace.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.
Amen

(P.S. If you were wondering, I just checked the online grade... I didn't do too shabby on my test- all that worrying for nothing!)
